So I've decided to have a garden. Next step is to reseach how exactly one goes about gardening organically. Soil deficiencies, sun-exposure layouts, cold-frames, seeding indoors. . . what a crazy new world I've jumped into!
After doing quite a bit of research online, I went to the bookstore and looked at the huge wall of gardening books. For Ever. It was hard to decide on just one book. I really wanted to take them all home with me. Being a bit of a bibliophile, of course I feel the first tool of a gardener should be a large bookshelf crammed full of books, old and new.
Keeping my budget in mind, I managed to depart with one really great book: "Small-Plot High-Yield Gardening" by Sal Gilbertie. I landed on a fabulous book. It's not too lengthy, it's slightly jocular and it takes no prisoners. I am still reading, but thus far have come away with a general understanding of each component of successful gardening. I have been amused by anectdotal proof of the theories outlined in the book. I have been given the straight skinny on how much time, effort and money is really required in my venture. Best of all, Sal takes an organic approach to gardening with straight-forward simplicity - and he leaves out the soap-box speeches.
I recommend this book to every burgeoning gardener. Now, back to my reading. . .
